Concentration bancaire et offre de crédit des banques: quels enseignements pour la zone CEMAC ?
Abstract
The objective of this article is to assess the effect of the concentration on the supply of credit in CEMAC. To achieve this, we apply an empirical model developed by Beck andal. (2004). The estimation of this model from COBAC and IMF data over the period 1998-2017 shows that banking concentration limits the supply of credit from banks in the CEMAC. In fact, any one point increase in banking concentration leads to a 0.00893 point decrease in the supply of credit at the one percent threshold. The robustness test carried out confirms this result. Thus, two models of the industrial economy are opposed on the question of the effect of banking concentration on the supply of credit namely the Structure-Behavior-Performance model which supports a negative effect of the banking concentration on the supply of credit and the hypothesis of the efficient structure which does not necessarily establish a relation between the two, on the contrary, this one would be, if necessary, rather positive. The empirical investigation made within the framework of the economies of the CEMAC confirms the prediction of SCP model.
