Community Based Natural Resource Management Approach and Sustainable Economic Use of the Aberdare Forest, Kenya

Abstract
Community-based natural resource management approach has been seen to be a better option in managing natural resources since it takes a participatory approach as opposed to the top-down system which failed to work. However, there are mixed opinions as to whether community-based natural resource management is an effective approach. In Kenya, through the registration of community forest associations, community members living around the forest reserves are able to conserve and manage resources while at the same time using the resources sustainably. This study sought to establish the relationship between community-based natural resource management and the sustainable economic use of the Aberdare Forest in Kenya. This research study used a census survey research design which means that data will be collected across all groups under the three registered community forest associations, that is, Kiamakia CFA, Gatare CFA and Wanjerere CFA. The data was collected using a structured questionnaire for analysis. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze data which was then presented in tables and figures. The study concludes that community participation in needs assessment, resource mobilization, implementation and monitoring affects the sustainable economic use.
